Tip of the Week:

Jojoba oil is similar to sebum, which is secreted by human sebaceous glands to lubricate and protect skin and hair. Jojoba oil conditions hair and prevents it from becoming brittle and dull. I love this oil!! If you wash frequently this is a great oil replacement.

Hair Conditioners

This is a topic that I have been asked about time after time.

CONDITIONERS!!!!!

Deep Conditioning

Rinse Out Conditioners/Co-Washing Conditioners

Leave In Conditioners

Protein Treatments & Reconstructor Treatments

Hot Oil Treatments

Deep Conditioning:

Deep conditioning combats the damage of chemical treatments, coloring, heat styling and environmental pollution. By deep-conditioning your hair on a regular basis, this will help replenish lost moisture and keep hair shiny and resilient.

Many people mistake deep conditioning for deep protein treatments. It is possible to perform deep conditioning treatments without the use of protein. What "TYPICALLY" separates deep conditioning from 5 minute rinse out conditioning is simply the amount of time you leave the conditioner in your hair and the penetration process.

Usually, deep conditioning requires a 3 step process.

1. Apply the conditioner (one last says leave in for 10 minutes or more)

2. Place plastic cap or plastic wrap over your hair (A hot towel may also be used in place of plastic caps or wraps).

3. For best results, sit under a hooded dryer for 15-30 minutes (or just wrapping your hair and placing a hot towel over it, if dryer is not available).

As for me, I personally deep condition my hair every other week. Being that I do not put any chemicals, flat irons, blow dryers, or extended sunlight in my hair, every other weeks works great for me. But remember the products I deep condition with has some protein in it, but not as much as it does when I do my every 6 weeks protein treatment.

Product I use to achieve this process: Giovanni smooth as silk, deep conditioner.

Rinse Out Conditioners:

After washing your hair, or for co-washing your hair, the 5 minute rinse out conditioner is applied. It's easier to do this process in the shower, after you apply your conditioner start and finish bathing (this should give your conditioner enough time to penetrate) and then rinse out your conditioner with cool water to close your cuticles. The secret to your rinse out conditioner, is not rinsing out all of the conditioner on your ends of your hair. Shhhhhhh!!

As for me with my current length of hair.....(I co-washed more when it was shorter)

Summer - Shampoo 1-2 times a week and co-wash once a week

&

Winter - Shampoo once a week and co-wash once a week

Product I use to achieve this process: Herbal Essence Totally Twisted & Giovanni 50/50 Conditioner

Leave In Conditioners:

After shampooing and conditioning your hair, it's now time to apply a leave in conditioner. You do not rinse this one out. Many people actually skip this part, however it is very essential to your hairs health.

Products I use to achieve this process: (Kimmay Inspired)

As for me I apply this mixture at least 4-5 times a week, even between washing.

1 oz Knot Today Leave-In

2 tablespoons of Aloe Vera Juice

2 teaspoons of Castor Oil

2 teaspoons of Jojoba Oil

Protein Treatments & Re-constructor Treatments:

Protein Treatments:

Can be used to strengthen the hair and keep it shiny. Protein for the hair can be done using internal or external treatments. For internal treatment, a diet that is rich in lean protein is beneficial. External treatments include protein in shampoos, conditioners and other products that you use directly on your hair. To get the most out of protein treatments and to grow long shiny hair, use both external and internal protein.

Protein treatments are mainly used as high protein deep conditioners.

  • Using a protein treatment on your hair works in three different ways: it strengthens the hair, repairs the outer layer, and promotes new growth. Protein treatments support and add to the keratin protein that is already found in the hair. This adds elasticity and strength to the hair that helps with shedding and breakage. Doing a protein treatment is fairly simple. Thoroughly clean the hair with a clarifying shampoo. This will remove any buildup that accumulated from using other products. To get the best out of the treatment, try saturating wet or dry hair and let it sit for about 20 minutes. For better results, cover the head with a plastic cap or wet towel. You can also sit under a hooded dryer to help the treatment work.

"As for me, I apply a protein treatment to my hair every 6 weeks."

Products I use to achieve my PROTEIN TREATMENT process (pictures below):

4 Tablespoons Herbal Essence Totally Twisted

2 tablespoons Aloe Vera Juice

2 Egg YOLKS

2 Teaspoons Jojoba Oil

2 Teaspoons Vegetable Glycerin

Mix really well, to dissolve any egg white that may have got in the mixture.

(This is more than enough for my length hair, this mixture can be cut in half for shorter hair, try to use the entire mixture. DO NOT store left overs)

After applying the protein mixture place a plastic cap over your hair and either sit under the hooded dryer for 20-30 min or do like me and perform a little cleaning around the house for about 45 min. After I rinse the protein treatment out, I apply my Giovanni Smooth as Silk deep conditioner for about 5-10 minutes.

Re-constructor treatments:

  • Are treatments used on damaged or chemically processed hair, they help to repair and restore. Such as Jocko Moisturizer Conditioner and Dudley's DEC 28 etc. The process to such treatments should be followed as they are stated on the back of each product.

I am 100 % natural, I do not apply any chemicals to my hair, I do not blow dry nor do I flat iron my hair, I do not feel as if my hair is damaged, so "I" do not use re-constructors at all. If I ever do any of the previous stated to my hair then maybe at that time I will revisit the idea of applying a re-constructor to my hair.

Hot Oil Treatments:

Generally with a hot oil treatment they are used once a week, if indeed your hair is dry or damaged. This treatment gives more strength and body to the hair. The hot oil can help repair damaged and weak hair as every strand gets the treatment it needs instantly when the oil is applied.

If you have dry and damaged hair, a hot oil treatment will work wonders.  If your hairstyle demands blow-dryers, curling irons, straightening irons, or hot rollers, hot-oil treatments can help counteract the daily damage.

After heating the tube of oil in the water, generally for a minute or so, you can message the hot oil treatment into your wet hair. Massage all the oil thoroughly in the hair so that all the hair will be able to be exposed to the hot oil. Many times people that use hot oil treatments do not make sure that all their hair is exposed and this can cause weakness to those areas of the hair. After this is done, you can rinse the hair and the scalp thoroughly under the running water. After the hot oil treatment is done processing, shampoo your hair as you regularly do. You can use the hot oil treatment once or week or as often as needed.

As for me, I use hot oil treatments as needed. I use them more frequent in the colder months. When I say as needed.....if I notice more hair in the comb after I detangle, or if I notice my hair getting really dry, I would apply a hot oil treatment to my hair.

Products I use to achieve this process:

  • 2/3 cup sunflower oil or cold pressed olive oil
  • Resealable plastic bag
  • 1 tbs. honey
  • Bowl of hot water
  • Shower cap
  • Shampoo

Fill a bowl with very hot water and put the plastic bag of hot oil treatment in the hot water. Leave it only until it's warm.

Apply the hot oil treatment to your dry hair, working it through from the roots to the ends.

Put a plastic cap over your hair or wrap it with plastic wrap, and cover the plastic with a warm towel.

Leave the hot oil treatment in the hair for 15 to 20 minutes.

Shampoo out the hot oil treatment and condition your hair as usual.
